All the talk of building physical walls has died down somewhat of late, but the culture of division remains and it is this figurative wall that I wish to address. A free society will always harbour a pluralism of views and the truly freedom-loving should be deeply perturbed by the extent to which otherwise reasonable individuals on either side of a political divide will behave as if morally outraged at the very existence of their opposite number. This can only lead to a weakness of debate and I believe, is to the detriment of society, whatever that means.
I had been thinking a lot about Mending Wall by Robert Frost and so borrowed a little from him. It's really good.
